Mexico Work Visa Process 2026 | Guidelines & Requirements

    No Comments3 Mins Read

Mexico, officially known as the United Mexican States, offers ample job opportunities in sectors with skill shortages. Foreigners interested in working in Mexico can either apply for a short-term Visitor Visa with work authorization or a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) with a work permit for long-term employment. This guide focuses on the Temporary Resident Visa, valid for up to four years, and provides a step-by-step overview of the requirements, application process, and essential information.

    Types of Mexico Work Visas

    1. Visitor Visa with Work Authorization: This visa is ideal for short-term assignments, allowing work for up to six months but is not renewable.
    2. Temporary Resident Visa with Work Permit (TRV): Commonly used for long-term employment, this visa allows foreign nationals to work in Mexico for up to four years and is renewable.

Requirements for a Temporary Resident Visa with Work Permit

To apply for the TRV with a work permit, the following requirements must be met:

    • Job Offer in Mexico: A valid employment offer from a Mexican employer.
    • Employer Sponsorship: The employer initiates the work permit application on behalf of the applicant.
    • Visa Application: Submit an application at the Mexican embassy or consulate in your country.
    • Documents Needed:
      • Valid passport
      • Completed application forms
      • Employment letters (job offer, company registration)
      • Proof of income or financial stability (e.g., airline ticket as proof of return travel)
      • Visa application fees

Steps to Obtain a Mexico Temporary Resident Visa

The process involves two main phases:

    1. Employer Application for Work Permit: The employer must obtain a work permit from the National Immigration Institute (INM) in Mexico before the applicant can begin the visa process.
    2. Visa Application at the Mexican Embassy: After the work permit is approved, the applicant submits their Temporary Resident Visa application at a Mexican embassy or consulate in their home country.
    3. Visa to Residence Card Conversion: Upon arriving in Mexico, the visa must be exchanged for a Temporary Resident Card at an INM office, which permits the holder to work and reside in Mexico.

How to Apply for the Mexico Temporary Resident Visa

    1. Schedule an Appointment: Contact your local Mexican embassy to arrange a visa appointment. For embassy details, visit the Secretarรญa de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) website or search “Embassy of Mexico in [Your Country].”
    2. Complete the Application Form: Download and complete the form from the embassyโ€™s website.
    3. Prepare Required Documents: Collect all necessary documents, including proof of employment, passport, application form, and fees.
    4. Submit and Pay Fees: Submit the application in person and pay the applicable fees.
    5. Await Visa Processing: Processing times vary by location.

Post-Arrival in Mexico: Exchanging the TRV for a Residence Card

Within 30 days of arrival, you must exchange your Temporary Resident Visa for a Temporary Resident Card at an INM office. This card is valid for up to four years and provides a path to apply for permanent residency after that period.

Duration of the TRV and Temporary Residence Card

    • TRV Validity: Six months.
    • Temporary Residence Card Validity: Four years, after which holders can apply for permanent residency.
